The best credentials an SEO company can give you is a good verbal reference from one of their clients. Anyone can give you a list of results from some random website and say that that was their work. Get them to prove it. Talk to one or more of their clients and find out what they are really like. Also, I don't see the need to pay attention to how well their own website is doing as an indication of how good they are. I have been doing SEO for a few years now and I only just set up a website a couple of months ago. It's rising in the rankings but as I always say, SEO is a patience game and I don't have much time to worry about my own site and I dare say, a lot of other SEO people are like that too. I only have it there so people can read what I'm about and they have some sort of a reference point.
